Today I wanted to share with you what I believe is a great way to test out your entrepreneurial idea before you actually get started. This is something I have done personally in both my Health Coaching Business & with Medical Marketing Whiz and I know many other entrepreneurs who have done this as well.
The #1 way to test out your business idea is to offer your services for FREE for 30-60 days.
Reach out to friends or family who might need your business or service and offer to have them trial it for free and provide their honest feedback. This is beneficial for a couple reasons. First off, it helps you gauge what kind of interest others will have in your idea. It is going to allow you to practice and figure out what objections may come up. It’s also going to help you build your confidence because no matter how prepared you think you are to start a new venture, we are always nervous about the unknown. Offering your service for free initially is going to help you work all of those kinks out.
When you offer your services for free initially it then naturally gives you the opportunity to ask people to take it further with you and actually join your paid program or buy your product.
Recently I have had several people reach out to me with an idea that they have been thinking about. I have one friend in medical sales that wanted to start a photography business. I have another very successful friend that told me she just started her own home staging business. Then of course, there are also people that are looking into starting things like me such as health coaching and consulting.
So let me share with you some examples of how I have encorporated free services to get my businesses started and then l will give you some examples from the people I mentioned above.
Most of you know I have two business. I have my health coaching business and my medical marketing business.
For my health coaching I offer a free group every month to help people with clean eating, cutting back on sugar, etc. This allows people a chance to check out what I have to offer and allows me to figure out how to align my content with people’s true needs. They get to know me and what I have to offer with no investment and then at the end of the free group a certain percentage of those people are interested in taking it a step further with my 30 day Challenge which is a paid program. Not only do these free groups help me to develop a sales funnel for my business but they also have helped me develop and improve my own skills as a coach.
When I was ready to leave my corporate medical device sales job and I had this idea to start my own medical marketing company. I initally reached out to three doctors that I respected and asked them if I could do marketing for them for free for two months. I wanted to see if my physician marketing idea actually worked. It was awesome because it gave me time to test out my idea and see what software or systems I would need to invest in before my business even launched and before I started asking anyone to pay me for my services.
So my photography friend that I was telling you about earlier…..She tested her idea out by offering to do a couple of photography sessions for free. Same thing with my home staging friend. She sought out some friends that were in the market to sell their house and staged their homes for free. Doing this not only gave them promotional materials to use for the future but also helped them to gain confidence in their skills.
Whether you are going to offer some kind of service or get into network marketing, I highly recommend you offer your services for free for a couple months and just see what happens. Like I said, it is the perfect way to figure out if it’s something people are interested in, gain confidence, and to invite people to actually pay you for their services.
In closing, I always encourage you to have multiple streams of income. Start a side business or turn your hobby into an income stream! Not only is it smart but it is also fun to have a side business that you are excited about! Don’t be afraid to test out your idea for free. The knowledge and experience you will gain will pay you back 10 fold once you are ready to launch!
